En Düsseldorf, Alemania, existe la comunidad japonesa más numerosa de Europa. Sin embargo, curiosamente, el grupo al que fui a ver allí está compuesto principalmente de alemanes. Wadōkyō es uno de los escasos grupos profesionales de taiko de Europa. Me interesaba mucho conocerlos porque su acercamiento al taiko coincide bastante con el mío, porque llevan mucho más tiempo que yo tocando (su líder, Frank Dubberke, más de 15 años) y además tienen dos escuelas con unos 100 alumnos en total al año. Cabe decir que en países de Europa como Alemania, Holanda, Bélgica o Francia hay mucha más tradición y conocimiento de taiko que en España. Ondekoza, el grupo del que nació Kodo, debutó en París en 1975, por ejemplo, y en esos países son habituales las giras de Kodo, Yamato o Gocoo, entre otros grupos, con los auditorios llenos.

Por tanto, con la idea de aprender tanto técnica como la experiencia de ser un grupo y escuela de taiko en Europa, a finales de julio me fui en “viaje de taiko”. Durante una semana me sumergí en recibir clases, charlar, ver vídeos, intercambiar experiencias… ¡un sueño! ¡Gracias, Wadōkyō!

Y como guinda al pastel, nos acercamos a Colonia a ver el nuevo espectáculo de Yamato, nada menos que en la Filarmónica. ¡Qué gusto ver la enorme sala a rebosar y todo el mundo participando en los momentos indicados y divirtiéndose!

Me parece importante que los apasionados del taiko que no somos japoneses creemos lazos, tenemos algo propio que aportar a este arte y para eso necesitamos descubrir nuestra identidad musical. Existe una conferencia de taiko en USA, ¿llegará un día en que podamos realizar una nosotros, o al menos acudir a aquélla con una buena representación?

Düsseldorf, Germany, is home to the largest Japanese community in Europe. Curiously enough, the group I went to visit there is made up mainly of German players. Wadōkyō is one of the few professional taiko groups in Europe. I wanted to meet them because their approach to taiko is similar to mine, because they’ve been playing for a longer time (their leader, Frank Dubberke, more than 15 years) and also because they have two schools with around 100 pupils per year. It should be said that European countries like Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium of France have a longer tradition and knowledge of taiko than Spain. As an example, Ondekoza, the group origin of Kodo, made their debut in Paris in 1975 and Kodo, Yamato or Gocco, among others, tour often those countries.

Therefore, with the aim of learning taiko technique as well as their experience of being a European taiko group and school, at the end of July I embarked on this «taiko trip». During one week I took lessons, asked and listened, watched videos, shared experiences… a real dream! Thank you, Wadōkyō!

To top it all, we went to Köln to see the new show of Yamato, in the Philharmonie no less. How great to see the big hall crowded and everybody participating in the specified moments and having fun!

I find important that we taiko lovers that are not Japanese form a bond between us, we have something unique to contribute to this Art, and to be able to do it we need to discover our musical identity. There’s a Taiko Conference in the US. Someday will we also be able to hold one or at least attend that one with a good representation?
